The Hanging of Samuel Ash By

Sheldon Russell

Like many in war-weary New Mexico, rail yard detective Hook Runyon is fed up with being told to do the impossible with nothing. He's been burdened with a hapless rich-boy trainee, the railroad workers are on strike, and he's three steps behind an elusive ring of pickpockets. So when he finds a young man hanging from a train crossing light, Hook is tempted to dismiss him as one more nameless hobo who gave up.
